Valediction: Forbidding Mourning

John Donne employs paradox, initial rhyme, and subtle but remarkable metaphors in his works. In a Valediction of forbidding mourning, Donne relies in general on extended metaphors to convey his message. First, he compares his disengagement from his married cleaning lady to the separation of a mans soul from his dead body when he dies. While Donne and his married woman are a start out, they cannot express physical love; thus, they are like the body of the dead man.
